To help renters and first-time home buyers, NDP calls for short-term rental crackdown

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Housing critic Jessica Bell issued the following statement in response to today’s report by Desjardins concluding that short-term rentals have significantly impacted housing affordability.

“The Ford government has made it too easy for investors to take advantage of lax rental laws and turn long-term rental homes into short-term rentals. This drives up housing prices and rents for everyone else.

“The recommendations in Desjardins' report are a step in the right direction. To protect renters from illegal eviction and to increase rental housing supply, Ontario should crack down on short-term rentals in investment properties in areas with low rental vacancy rates, and properly enforce its rental laws.”
